After a storm

Hail, wind and your insurer: what we do and what we don't

If a storm hit your roof, here is what to do first, and what a roofer in Texas may and may not do for you.

First steps

What to do first

  • 01

    Stay off the roof

A wet or damaged roof is slick. Look from the ground.

  • 02

    Take photos

From the ground, of the roof, the gutters and any water inside.

  • 03

    Call your insurer

Read your policy for your deductible, and ask what it covers, including cosmetic dents.

  • 04

    Keep water out

A tarp or a temporary patch is fine. Keep the receipts.

  • 05

    Get written estimates

From roofers you called, not from people who knocked on your door.

A note for Texas homeowners

What Texas law says

In Texas, a roofer may not act as your insurance adjuster or take on your deductible. We do not call ourselves public adjusters, and we make no offer about your deductible. We can write you an estimate for the roof work. Your insurer decides what your policy covers.

Home contracts carry the notice Texas requires. If a roofer offers to make your deductible go away, do not sign: in Texas that is not allowed.

Storm questions

Will hail dent a metal roof?

It can. A dent is mostly how it looks, and a metal roof usually still keeps water out. Ask your insurer whether your policy covers cosmetic dents.

Can you tarp my roof?

Call and tell us there is water coming in. We will tell you what we can do and when.

Should I sign with the first roofer who knocks?

No. Get written estimates from roofers you called, and read the contract first.

Will my insurer pay for a metal roof?

That depends on your policy. Ask your insurer before you decide, and tell us what they say.

Water coming in, or a roof to look at?

Call or text a photo. We will tell you what we see.
